Grant Requests

There were no new grant requests received.

Grant Status Update
  • Shelter Box – Courtney will prepare an application for a shelter box grant that, if approved, would provide reserved funds for an emergency need.
  • YMCA – Dennis said that the Y will submit a proposal before our June meeting.
  • The Arts at Media-Providence Friends School to help students participate in a cultural awareness program. The request was for $7000 to help a class of 20 students. Members noted that a grant of any amount would be accepted. A decision will be made at our June meeting.
  • Young Parent Support Network, a $2000 request to help high school students with children in a mentoring program. Larry told the board that funds like these are used to have programs for the Moms and children in the program such as a visit to Linvilla Orchard which is very special for many of the participants. He will see if a grant could be specified for that use.
  • McDade-Cara School of Irish Dance, a request of $100 had previously been denied.
  • Brain Tree School, Uganda. A request for $1000 to help provide a concrete floor under the pavilion covering that was constructed as part of the Rotary Global Grant in 2013. Courtney suggested that we see if a district global grant would be possible to match our contribution. Larry will pursue that possibility. A decision will be made at our June meeting.

Larry expressed appreciation for the international work made possible by the many hours of time donated by Govinda. It is rare for a club to have a person willing to put in the time and personal effort to initiate and do the detail work of Global grants and it would benefit our club to understand what an opportunity this

provides. While we may not be able to finance every program he proposes, we should work to support as many as possible. Nancy gave a bit of history of club support for international projects Gary noted that his Oklahoma club was active in international projects and when members visited the sites of projects, bringing back their own photo’s, video’s and stories, it always energized the club. Bryan said that we could also approach other clubs to help support some of these programs – especially smaller clubs who would like to have a global project but don’t have someone like Govinda to oversee the process.

Dennis thanked members for the good discussion. The meeting adjourned at 9:55 a.m.

NEXT MEETINGS: Tuesday, June 20, 2017, 9:00 a.m. at the Court Diner.
